Narrative Structure

Linear - The story is told from beginning to end. Circular - The story starts at the end, then jumps back and works up to that point. Non-linear - Can flash forward or back to scenes that actually take place in the past or future.  Episodic - Have sections, like chapters. This means they may not be in chronological order.  Fabula - The actual order of events in the story. Sjuzhet - The order they're told in.  The hero's journey is a common narrative archetype, or story template, that involves a hero who goes on an adventure, learns a lesson, wins a victory with that newfound knowledge, and then returns home transformed.

Barthes in Tarantino Films (LO3)

A code is an aspect of a text from which the audience can derive meaning. We can do this by decoding  or  deconstructing the text; literally breaking it into pieces. •  Hermeneutic/enigma code - An enigma code is a mystery within a text that is not immediately answered.  •  Proairetic/action code - Parts of a narrative which are related to things happening. This code, along with enigma codes can create considerable suspense.  •  Semantic code - Something within a text that means something, often multiple meanings. There can be many meanings within a single text. •  Symbolic code - A part of a text that 'stands in' for, or means something else.  •  Referential code - Where a part of a text refers to something outside of the text. This assumes the audience has knowledge of whatever it is that the text is referring to.  https:// youtu.be/x2WK_eWihdU?t=57  -  Referential code - Where a part of a text r...

Binary Opposition in Films (LO3)

Levi Strauss, anthropologist in the 1900s, made a theory called binary opposites, which entails that the majority of narratives in media forms such as books and films contain opposing main character. This helps to thicken the plot further and progress the narrative, includes contrast. Light and dark  Right and wrong Good and evil Sanity and insanity Human and alien Strength and weakness Honest and deceitful Silence and noise. Example of light and dark: (Light side wearing bright colours and the dark side using dark and powerful colours) Example of right and wrong (Hate you give) police unlawfully shoot man in traffic stop resulting in protests. Good and Evil (Jungle Book) Human and Alien (Monsters Inc)

Todorov - Simpsons (LO3)

Todorov proposed that all narratives (whether that be plays, books, files etc) contain these five fundamental stages in this order: 1. A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be). 2. A disruption of that order by an event. 3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred. 4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption. 5. A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium (it does not have to be the same old system). 1.  When Bart and Homer are playing dares and they are having fun and end up naked in the Krusty  Burger window and homer teases him 2.  Disruption is when everyone is dumping in toxic waste into the lake meaning no more can be dumped, homer dumps waste into the lake causing a giant dome to be put around the town, everyone is after Homer and his family and they escape through a sink hole and end on the other side of the dome and escape. 4.  Homer's family move to Alaska and they live for peace and escape. 5. Then they move back to Springfield, le...

Diegetic Sound:   Sound that originates from within the video or film's world  is termed diegetic sound. It can come either from on-screen or off-screen but it always happens at the same time the action takes place.  Non-Diegetic Sound:   Sometimes called commentary or non-literal sound, the non-diegetic sound is  any type of sound that does not specifically exist within the world of the film itself . In other words, it's the type of sound that characters in a movie cannot hear, but that we can. Baby Driver -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ARFyrM6gVs Baby Driver uses both non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound as the character can hear the music through his earphones, making it diegetic sound as the action is also taking place. Non-Diegetic sound is also being used as we can also hear the music being played but we can also hear the outside word sounds when he will struggle hearing this with these earphones in with music making it hard for him to hear....

Mise-en-scène Analysis (LO3)

Clothing: Wearing a suit shows a uniform of success. By them wearing a suit you are saying that you are succeeding in most cultures. Offers respectability and wealth. Location: The location shows a posh bedroom which looks like a hotel. Creates a dramatic claustrophobic scene due to the number of people, looks like some sort of private meeting was held.   Scene: All the dead bodies are connected to the case, representing that the meeting was related to the briefcase, creating significance to what's inside as they are all connected. There are no signs of injuries, however, there is a gun on the bed which shows that violence may have been expected. Maybe the briefcase may have been the weapon. Putting the character in front of the briefcase creates a sense of uncertainty, as the consumer cannot see what's in the briefcase. Creates dramatic prose. Lighting: The scene is very bright showing that they don't want to be dramatic or spooky but want our highest attention the light p...
